This ebook constitutes the refereed lawsuits of the ninth overseas convention on Extending Database know-how, EDBT 2004, held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in March 2004. The forty two revised complete papers offered including 2 business program papers, 15 software program demos, and three invited contributions have been conscientiously reviewed and chosen from 294 submissions. The papers are geared up in topical sections on disbursed, cellular and peer-to-peer database structures; facts mining and data discovery; reliable database platforms; cutting edge question processing innovations for XML facts; information and data on the internet; question processing ideas for spatial databases; foundations of question processing; complex question processing and optimization; question processing recommendations for facts and schemas; multimedia and quality-aware platforms; indexing thoughts; and obscure series development queries.

Note that data mining is a technology that is critical for say analysts so that they can extract patterns previously unknown. However, we do not want the information to be used in an incorrect manner. For example, based on information about a person, an insurance company could deny insurance or a loan agency could deny loans. In many cases these denials may not be legitimate. Therefore, information providers have to be very careful in what they release. Also, data mining researchers have to ensure that privacy aspects are addressed.

Since their introduction [3], Bloom filters have seen many uses such as web caching [4] and query filtering and routing [2,5]. Consider a set of elements. The idea is to allocate a vector of bits, initially all set to 0, and then choose independent hash functions, each with range 1 to For each element the bits at positions in are set to 1 (Fig. 2). A particular bit may be set to 1 many times. Given a query for the bits at positions are checked. If any of them is 0, then certainly Otherwise, we conjecture that is in the set although there is a certain probability that we are wrong.

The concept of pervasive computing implies that the computing environment is available everywhere and is ‘into everything’. The concept of mobile computing implies that the end-user device may be connected even when on the move. In general usage of the term, ambient computing implies both pervasive and mobile computing. The idea, then, is that an end-user may find herself connected (or connectable – she may choose to be disconnected) to the computing environment all the time. The computing environment may involve information provision (access to database and web facilities), office functions (calendar, email, directory), desktop functions (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation editor), perhaps project management software and systems specialised for her application needs – accessed from her end-user device connected back to ‘home base’ so that her view of the world is as if at her desk.
